Paper Overview

Proposed title: The Love and Respect Paradox: How an invalid description of men and women became an international bestseller.

Research question: Is there validity in the claims of Love & Respect that a difference exists between men and women in regards to preferred ways of experiencing relational closeness and security?

Synopsis

Incorporating a systematic review of  Emmerson Eggerichs's Love and Respect, the researcher will attempt to define the meanings Eggerichs gives to "love" and "respect." Additionally, the researcher will describe the statistical methods utilized to derive the idea (in both Love and Respect and Feldhahn's For Women Only) that men need respect and women desire love in heterosexual marriage relationships. Unconditional respect will be compared with the Angel in the House ideal of Victorian femininity (using Gilbert and Gubar's Madwoman in the Attic as well as primary Victorian sources) **and the view of male authority described by Eggerichs will be contrasted with the symbolic traditionalism and pragmatic egalitarianism defined by Sally Gallagher in Evangelical Identity and Gendered Family Life.

Utilizing our matched-pair data from the Gender Roles in Marriage Survey (GRIMS), specifically the ranking question on whether respondents would least like to be alone, unloved, inadequate, or disrespected, the researcher will investigate gender-based differences on ranking choices. The researcher will also investigate differences in marital and sexual satisfaction outcomes based on ranking choices.

Electronic copies of relevant books will be supplied. Joanna Sawatsky will supply data tables and access to data files for further statistical investigation as required.

Skills required:

Researcher will complete a thematic analysis of the definitions of “love” of “respect” presented in Love and Respect. They will describe the statistical methodology utilized to derive the idea that women need love and men need respect. Using the results of a matched-pair data set, the researcher will conduct statistical analyses of a ranked-choice question based on the Love and Respect paradigm.

Budget:
