Paper Overview

Proposed title: Easy, Breezy, Beautiful Cover Up Girls: An investigation of the impact and extent of modesty messages in evangelical resources for adolescent girls.

Research question: How did messages about girls’ bodies, boys’ sexual proclivities, and modesty affect girls’ self-esteem in high school and beyond?

Synopsis

Incorporating quotes from bestselling evangelical books for adolescent girls and young women, the researcher will describe the impact of modesty messages. The negative correlation previously identified between belief in modesty messages and knowledge of sexual education terms in high school will be investigated further as will the negative association between belief in modesty messages and self-esteem outcomes for survey respondents (both in high school and currently). Investigations of characteristics of the church community and piety of women who internalized modesty messages in their adolescence will also be incorporated into the paper.

Joanna Sawatsky will provide data tables. Electronic copies of relevant evangelical literature will also be provided.
